Actually, I think Tony Stark is far from worthless without his suit. Dude is rich.
Actually, that Iron Man one is referring to a storyline where Tony gets injured to the point of being paralyzed without wearing the suit, making it his only option until he figures out a way to heal himself.
I believe it was his alcoholism that caused the injury in the first place.
